The Kit of Essential Oils You Should Start With - dōTERRA Family Essentials Kit

The very first box of essential oils I purchased was the doTERRA Family Essentials Kit. This kit comes packed with the most versatile set of oils that act as your own personal pharmacy. *Anything from bug bites to indigestion, stuffy nose to minor cuts and burns, the Family Essentials Kit is the First Aid Kit you need that has you covered!

What’s in the Kit?

  • 5ml each of:

  • On Guard Blend

  • DigestZen Blend

  • Breathe Blend

  • Deep Blue Blend

  • Peppermint

  • Lavender

  • Lemon

  • Melaleuca (Tea Tree)

  • Oregano

Frankincense

I use these oils from this kit the most:

On Guard is a blend I use everyday. Each powerful drop of cloves and orange (it tastes like Christmas!) can boost your immune system from disease, whether you are diffusing it in your room, putting a single drop in water, or making your own cleansers for the office and home. Used regularly, and you will benefit wholly from its Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade oil.

(A blend of Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary Oils).

All doTERRA Essential Oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade.

On Guard Beadlets are also available, and are so convenient for parents who would love for their kids to conveniently get a little extra healthy boost before heading to their germ-infested schools. Or, use On Guard to make your own all natural hard candies to soothe a sore throat!

Lavender Oil I use every night. Most people know its great for relaxing the body and aiding in sleep, but what you might not realize is that Lavender, used topically, naturally disinfects and soothes the skin. This is why it is often used in hand wash and lotion. *Lavender is great for helping to prevent scars from minor cuts or burns, or to soothe bug bites.

Plus I can’t exaggerate how much I use Lavender: I dab the oil directly on my wrists and forehead every night before I sleep; I made my own linen spray, which not only do I spray on every dream catcher before she’s boxed up, but I frequently spray it on the sheets and pillows. I have also made a set of Lavender-scented beeswax candles, which burn for 2 hours! and you can purchase them here.

These projects are SUPER easy, I swear!

and I'll have the recipes for you soon on the blog!

Deep Blue is a blend that’s fantastic for athletes and those with minor aches. Its basically an all natural Tiger Balm or Bengay (even smells like it!). It gently pushes heat into your muscles, while still giving a menthol coolness just where you need it. Massage it into sore muscles to activate the healing sensations. There are also options for those with sensitive skin:

  • add 3-4 drops of the oil to an unscented lotion of your choice and apply, or

check out the Deep Blue Lotion Rub by doTERRA, which does the work for you, but better!

(A blend of Wintergreen, Camphor, Peppermint, Blue Tansy, Blue Chamomile, Helichrysum, and Osmanthus Oils).

Peppermint (menthol) Oil naturally follows. This is another oil that, like Lavender, can be used for multiple projects, like making your own all natural toothpaste, hand lotion, shampoo or conditioner. I love putting a single drop on each temple at the start of the After Party (your friends will love you if your share!). Its naturally cooling and soothing, which can be such a blessing when you’ve got a headache. Peppermint is also a natural stomach soother— add a drop to a tall glass of water (stir), or a hot cup for Oil Tea and your tummy will feel tons better.

Frankincense Oil is a wonderful meditation tool, and it smells like Biblical and ancient times! Before I practice meditation and yoga I swipe a drop over my third eye to help relax, soothe, and and calm both the tension I naturally carry there (RBF?) as well as my skin. Its rumored to prevent wrinkles! It is a natural anti-inflammatory, and its soft woodsy smell soothes the spirit. It's recommended to put a drop on each foot before meditation or sleep for a deeper body relaxation.

The following oils I don’t use daily, but not because they lack power or versatility:

Lemon Oil is bright and sunny, and its a beautiful way to start a day. Short on fresh lemon slices? Put a drop in your ice cubes for chilly lemon water without chasing down fresh fruit every morning. Its also a natural disinfectant, which is why its used so frequently in home cleaning products and body washes. These are super easy to make for your own all-natural cleansers!

Melaleuca Oil, also known as Tea Tree Oil, is the best and most well-known for soothing mosquito bites. Naturally cooling, its anti-inflammatory qualities go to work fast when used topically. Also good for minor cuts and burns, as it naturally disinfects. A Melaleuca Roll On is available for super convenience. This is one every kid should have in their bag when they’re outdoors.

Oregano Oil is a natural anti-inflammatory and subtle pain reliever. *Those suffering from osteoporosis may benefit from use of this oil. Oregano is typically too harsh to put directly on the skin, so it is suggested you add a drop or two to a carrier oil, like coconut, olive, or jojoba oil.

Breathe is a blend that is a good one to have by the bed or in the office if you tend to get a stuffy nose. When I know I’m going to have a hard workout, I dab the smallest drop of Breathe right under my nose to encourage and enhance my nasal breathing (ultimately more efficient breathing than through the mouth). *Likewise, rubbing 2-3 drops on your chest helps open the airways, perfect before a run or spin class, or to ease respiratory distress.

(A blend of Laurel, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Melaleuca, Lemon, Cardamom, Ravintsara, and Ravensara Oils).

DigestZen is a blend that felt like a godsend when I got food poisoning recently. It smells like spicy licorice-peppermint, and one drop into a tall glass of water on the morning my stomach turned became the freshest feeling I’d had in days! By the end of the day I was feeling way more stable, and that nasty taste in my mouth that I started the day with was long gone.

(A blend of Ginger, Peppermint, Caraway, Coriander, Anise, Tarragon, and Fennel Oils).

If you’ve been all talk and no action about making your home chemical-free, than you definitely want to stock your cupboard with the Family Essentials Kit. 5ml of each oil will last you months despite regular use. *Safe for pets and kids, using Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade oils will change your perspective on the ease of living naturally.

I have zero regrets about starting with the Family Essentials Kit. I found myself completely impressed with the power and versatility of these oils, and I honestly use them every day.
